Yemen is a Middle East country placed on the southwestern and southern border of Arabian Peninsula. It has been in news due to the political uprising in the country that began in early 2011. Yemen was a part of Ottoman Empire for centuries before it gained independence from the empire in 1918. After that, apart of Yemen was ruled by the United Kingdom. It became a republic nation in 1990. Since then, civil wars, uprisings against the government have often caused unrest in the atmosphere of the country.

Yemen is located at the geographical coordinates of 15 North and 48 East. It is spread across an area of 555,000 square kilometres that makes it the 50th largest country in the world followed by Thailand. It is also the 51st most populous nation in the world with a population of 23,580,000 according to the 2009 estimate. Yemen shares its boundaries with Oman in the east, Saudi Arabia in the north and Red Sea in the west. Socotra is the largest island in Yemen, which is made up of over 200 islands. Most of the islands are volcanic in nature. Sana'a is the capital and largest city in Yemen.

Yemen is one of the poorest countries in the world owing to its declining natural resources and widespread corruption. The economy mainly depends on the oil reserves, which are not in large quantities either. Culturally, Yemen is a rich and diverse country.
