Ukraine is the largest country in Europe located in the eastern part of the European continent. In the medieval times, Ukraine has been ruled by various empires, kingdoms and countries. After the end of First World War, Ukraine emerged to be one of the founding republics of the Soviet Union and later after the Second World War, a founding member of the United Nations. It gained independence from Soviet Union in 1991.

Ukraine is located at the geographical coordinates of 49 North and 32 East. This country is spread over an area of 603,628 square kilometres, making it the 46th largest country in the world followed by Madagascar. It is also the 29th most populous nation in the world after Colombia. The total population of Ukraine according to 2010 census is 45,888,000. Ukraine shares its boundaries with Poland, Slovakia and Hungary in the west, Belarus in the northwest, Romania and Moldova in the southwest and the Russian Federation in the east and northeast. The water boundaries that surround Ukraine are Black Sea in the south and Sea of Azov in southeast. Kiev is the capital and the largest city of Ukraine.

Fertile plains, plateaus and rivers characterize the geography of Ukraine. The mountain range of Carpathian Mountains is located in the west and its most elevated peak is Hora Hoverla at a height of 2061 metres. Some of the important rivers in the country are Dniester, Dnieper and Southern Buh.
