Also known as the Pearl of Africa, Uganda is a country located in East Africa. The country derives its name from the Kingdom of Buganda. British explorers on an exploration to find the source of the River Nile discovered this country in the middle of 19th century. British then colonized the country until Uganda gained independence in October 1962.

Uganda is located at the geographical coordinates of 1 North and 32 East. The country is spread over an area of 236,040 square kilometres. A population of 32,369,558 people makes it the 37th most populous country in the world followed by Iraq. Uganda shares its boundaries with Tanzania in the south, Rwanda in the southwest, Democratic Republic of Congo in the west, South Sudan in the north and Kenya in the east. Kampala is the capital and the largest city in the country.

Uganda is landlocked. The central part of the country is covered by marshy areas and drained by the Lake Kyoga. Lake Albert flows along the western border with Congo. Some other important lakes in the country are Lake Victoria that flows in the south, Lake Edwards and Lake George.

Uganda is one of the poorest countries in the world owing to some incompetent economic policies and political instability. The natural resources of the country like copper and natural gas have not been properly utilized. Agriculture is the biggest mainstay for the country's economy
