Mauritania is a country in West Africa and the Maghreb. French, who ruled the country in early 20th century, put an end to the practise of slavery that was existent there for centuries. In news for its recent political turmoil, Mauritania is one of the poorest countries in the world.

Mauritania is located at the geographical coordinates of 20° North and 12° West and spanned across an area of 1,030,700 square kilometres, which makes it the 29th largest country in the world followed by Egypt. The population of Mauritania according to 2009 census is 3,069,000 with one of the lowest population density in the world at 3.2/ km2. The countries that share their boundaries with Mauritania are Senegal to the southwest, Mali to the east and southeast, Algeria to northeast, Western Sahara to the north and Atlantic Ocean to the west.

The landscapes of Mauritania are characterized by mountains in the Adrar region and deserts covering a large portion of the country. Adrar Plateau is the highest of several sand plateaus found in the desert area of the country. The most elevated peak in the country is Kediet ej Jill at a height of 3281 feet.

Agriculture is the mainstay of Mauritania's economy, however its oil reserves are also emerging out to be of some assistance to the financial sector of the country.

Culturally, Mauritania is deeply influenced by French and the inhabitants also follow Arab culture to a great extent.
