Past decade has seen the advent of vehicle tracking and fleet management, being used to a great extent. Vehicle tracking is done by a company to keep a record of vehicles. It involves installation of monitoring devices like GPS (Global Positioning System) and GLONASS (Global Navigation System).

Various vehicle-tracking devices are in function; they all come under Passive and Active device. Passive devices monitor all the data but this data can be seen only when it is downloaded to the computer while Active devices gives information in real-time. Off-late few tracking devices have started using both, Active and Passive abilities. They monitor and display the information when the network is present, but if network is not available, these devices start storing the data that can be viewed later by the user. Vehicle tracking determines the speed, position and direction to which the fleet is heading.

The use of vehicle tracking can be seen in daily use too. It helps the passenger in knowing the arrival and the departure time of the transport vehicles. They can get the information as to which is the next bus or train to arrive at the platform. Tracking system assigns a unique number to every vehicle.

This type of tracking proves to be critical when it comes to private businesses. Company wants to know every minute detail, as they cannot afford any loss. They track down every single piece of information that they can get, even the driver's behaviour.

Fleet management is done by a company to minimize the risk involved in the investment that they have poured in on the operational cost of the vehicles. Fleet management includes maintaining and financing vehicles. The speed of the fleet can also be observed. Fleet management helps the company to know about vehicles that need replacement so that they can be changed and made to order timely, which leads to vehicles lasting long. Fleet management also ensures the security of the vehicles by installing tracking devices in them.

Companies for their own benefit employ vehicle tracking and fleet management, as it not only helps them in increasing their productivity, but also tells them where exactly are they losing out on money and time.
