An independent nation since 1932, Iraq is located in West Asia. Located at the coordinates of 33° North and 44° East, Iraq is spread over an area of 438,317 square kilometres. A population of 169,234 lives in the country. Iraq shares its boundary with Iran in the east, Jordan in the west, Turkey in the north and Saudi Arabia in the south.

The geography of Iraq is dominated by desert. Fertile plains are found around the rivers of Euphrates and Tigris. Northern Iraq mainly composes of high mountain ranges. Cheekah Dar at a height of 3.611 metres is the most elevated peak of Iraq. Along the river Shatt al-Arab, marshlands were there which drained in 1990's.

Iraq has a desert climate with mild to cool winters and hot and dry summers. Summers do not receive any rainfall and temperature rises to even more than 48 C. In winters, average temperature hovers between 15° to 20° C while mountainous regions receive heavy snow.

The oil reserves in Iraq account for 95% of its foreign stock earnings. Iraq's recent history has been stifled by war. Even though since 2009, things have begun improving, war has left an impact on Iraq's economy. Unemployment is a serious issue in the country. Iraq's culture is dominated by music, literature and sports. Football is the most popular sport in the country
