About Zenwalk Linux 2.2
This version introduces many improvements at system and desktop levels.
Zenwalk 2.2 runs atop Linux kernel version 184.108.40.206, introducing an improved hotplug subsystem fully based on udev. This is a major change in the way Linux handles hotpluging and coldpluging, thus resulting in faster boot times.
On the application side, the PDF reader Evince-0.5.0 comes as a replacement for Gpdf, and the Thunar filemanager (version 0.2.1) replaces the less popular XFFM.
About 140 packages have been updated, including the Mozilla Firefox Web browser (220.127.116.11), Mozilla Thunderbird email client (1.5), the Abiword word processor (18.104.22.168), Gnumeric spreadsheet (1.6.2), Tea code editor (12.0), as well as the Python-2.4.2 and Perl-5.8.8 language interpreters.
Like before, the Zenwalk desktop is based on XFCE (version 4.3.0). Though this is an SVN version, we decided to release it after three weeks of heavy testing, due to its stability and numerous improvements. The desktop Look & Feel has undergone some changes as well and introduces a new theme based on the Dropline Nuovo icon set.
The network configuration tool (Networkconfig) now handles WPA authentication, using Wpa_supplicant. Availability of both kernel drivers and Ndiswrapper allows Zenwalk to work with most wifi cards. Hardware detection is based on udev coldplug startup, completed by the Discover system.
Zenwalk core 2.2 , the text only version, will be released soon and will be targeted on building servers (LAMP, messaging, filesharing), and derived distributions (Arudius) rather than building a desktop system.
