Linux Distribution: Indiana Preview
Url: http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/indiana/

Project Indiana is working towards creating a binary distribution of an operating system built out of the OpenSolaris source code.

About Indiana Preview
The distribution is a point of integration for several current projects on OpenSolaris.org, including those to make the installation experience easier, to modernize the look and feel of OpenSolaris on the desktop, and to introduce a network-based package management system into Solaris.

The resulting distribution is a live-CD install image, and is fully permissible to be redistributed by anyone. It will also have the capability for developers to create their own, customized distribution based on Project Indiana. The first official release is due Spring 2008.

The distribution will showcase much of the work continuing in the OpenSolaris community and the best of breed open source software available within other open source communities. Moverover, the distribution will include work that closes the familiarity gap with existing GNU/Linux users eg. install and packaging.

Project Indiana will be a leading edge distribution with an expected adoption of OpenSolaris enthusiasts and developers on single user systems and basic server setups. It will also encourage new users coming to the platform for the first time.

With Project Indiana, other groups will be able to create derivative works according to their needs, for example, a special limited release for a conference or user group event. The infrastructure to produce these derivatives should be widely available, and it should be possible to swap out existing branding and configuration defaults.

Project Indiana at the very core needs to be completely re-distributable to encourage the participitary effect of community advocacy and opportunity for strong support within the free software communities.
